The Power of Local Partnerships

Connecting to the Local Church

One of the keys to long-term change in a region's spiritual climate is the connection of the surrounding population to the local church. While Alaska Missions works as an effective mission mobilizer by bringing the church at large to serve in Alaska, an undergirding goal in our efforts is to connect Alaskans to local churches. Our mission projects provide an intense yet short-term surge of believers to serve and share the Gospel with Alaskans. Local churches provide the long-term discipleship of new believers whom we long to see grow in their walks with Christ. Alaska Missions works with local church partners to bridge the gap from curiosity about Christ to thriving, faith-filled communities of believers.

Meet Our Local Church Partners

Below are a few examples of how Alaska Missions partners with local churches. Please be in prayer over these churches and their influence in Alaskan communities. Please also pray for more doors to open for Alaska Missions to partner with local churches and church planters to connect Alaskans to the body of Christ.

The surge of volunteers during our projects allows for an undeniable, visible presence in the local communities. Teaming with local church partners for key events in connection with mission projects draws the attention and participation of locals and furthers the relationship-building churches can do with their communities. From promoting and staffing the Burger Bash (a free community event hosted by Frontier Baptist Church) during Kodiak Crab Fest to weekly block parties during Mission Anchorage, the combined presence and workforce of the local church and Alaska Missions' volunteers yields numerous first-time connection points as well as deeper relationships with area residents.

Volunteer Housing and Project Staging

Local churches aren't only served by Alaska Missions—they provide a needed resource for us as well. Numerous Alaskan churches open their doors to house our mission team volunteers every year—a benefit that not only allows Alaska Missions to continue our mission mobilization efforts but also yields reliable annual revenue to the church. A portion of our project participation costs goes to support our local church hosts as they open their doors to our teams. This symbiotic relationship is a foundational element that allows Alaska Missions to mobilize hundreds of volunteer teams each year.

A prime example of this is our long-time church partnership with Nome Community Baptist Church. From Women's Conference to Iditarod, the church has hosted hundreds of volunteers throughout the years. Nome serves as a hub for 15 different villages in the Norton Sound region. Through this church partnership, we have been able to stage ministry outreach such as "Bible in a Bucket" in Nome and the surrounding villages.

Infrastructure and Resource Support

From small maintenance projects to skilled labor and construction endeavors, Alaska Missions' short-term volunteers provide valued labor needed to keep the physical buildings and assets of local Alaskan churches usable and updated to serve their congregations throughout the year. During the 2016 summer projects, Alaska Missions construction crews worked on College Heights Baptist Church of Soldotna's new administration building, the construction of which is a milestone and valuable resource in the life of this local church.

College Heights Baptist is also a partner for our Volunteer Center, which will be built next door to their church facilities. The Volunteer Center is a key piece of missional infrastructure needed to mobilize teams, reach the community, and connect Alaskans to local churches.
